Social media made publishing easy. Editing software made the rest considerably less painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now AI is taking aim at another part of the process: <strong>making the footage itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta&#8217;s Movie Gen is one of the more ambitious attempts at doing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Meta unveiled Movie Gen in October 2024, it showed an AI system that could take a written description and turn it into a short video. But calling it simply a \u201ctext-to-video generator\u201d doesn&#8217;t really capture what Meta was trying to build. Movie Gen was designed as a collection of models for generating video, creating sound, making personalized clips and editing existing footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, importantly, Movie Gen was a research project, not a public website where anyone could type a prompt and start making films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That distinction is worth keeping in mind, especially because many descriptions of Movie Gen online make it sound like Meta launched another consumer AI video app. It didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Meta did launch was a glimpse at where it thinks video creation is going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/socioblend.com\/blog\/does-facebook-notify-when-you-view-someones-profile\/17\/03\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9895\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Does Facebook Notify When You View Someone\u2019s Profile?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give it an idea, and it tries to make the scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The easiest way to understand Movie Gen is to forget the technical terminology for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppose you write a prompt describing a woman riding a bicycle through a city at night, with rain falling around her and neon lights reflecting off the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen attempts to turn those words into a moving scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That sounds straightforward until you consider what the model actually has to keep track of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A photograph only has to look right at one particular instant. Video doesn&#8217;t get that luxury. The bicycle has to remain a bicycle as it moves. The rider&#8217;s body has to move naturally. The street has to remain coherent. The rain needs to behave consistently. The camera can&#8217;t suddenly teleport. Objects shouldn&#8217;t randomly appear and disappear from one frame to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the central difficulty with AI video: <strong>the model has to understand not just what something looks like, but how it behaves over time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta&#8217;s Movie Gen research was built around that problem. Its video model had 30 billion parameters and was designed to generate 1080p video, with the research system producing clips of up to 16 seconds at 16 frames per second. Meta demonstrated a range of scenes, camera movements and interactions between people and objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sixteen seconds might not sound particularly impressive if you&#8217;re thinking about a movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is, however, plenty of time for an AI-generated scene to expose every little thing it doesn&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The sound matters more than you might think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Movie Gen&#8217;s more interesting ideas was that Meta didn&#8217;t stop at the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also built an audio model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audio system, which Meta says has 13 billion parameters, can generate things such as sound effects, ambient audio and music. It can use the video as context, allowing the generated sound to correspond to what is happening on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about a simple shot of someone walking through a forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visual model can generate the trees, the person and the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audio model can attempt to add footsteps, leaves moving underfoot, wind and the general ambience of the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That sounds like a small addition. It isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sound is one of the things that makes generated video feel convincing. A beautifully rendered scene with completely wrong audio can immediately give away that something isn&#8217;t right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen&#8217;s approach was therefore less about producing a silent clip that looks impressive and more about moving toward a piece of media that feels complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then Meta did something even more interesting: it put people in the videos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen could also work with a reference image of a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give it a photograph and a text description of a new situation, and the system could generate a video featuring that person in the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, theoretically, you could take a picture of yourself and ask for a video showing you somewhere that you never actually visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a surprisingly big leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative AI has already become very good at creating fictional people. The harder problem is taking a real person&#8217;s identity and carrying it consistently into a new generated scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta specifically worked on preserving identity and motion in its personalized video generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For creators, there are obvious possibilities here. A person could potentially create promotional material without physically shooting every variation. Brands could experiment with different environments. Social-media creators could produce scenes that would otherwise require a production crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is another side to this, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A technology that can convincingly put a real person into a situation they never experienced can also be used to misrepresent that person. The more convincing the technology becomes, the less comfortable the question of consent becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That problem isn&#8217;t unique to Movie Gen, but Movie Gen makes it easier to see why AI-generated video is going to be a much bigger conversation than simply \u201clook what the AI made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It can also change an existing video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a video from scratch is the flashy part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editing one may ultimately be more useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen&#8217;s research included a model for video editing based on natural-language instructions. Instead of manually performing a series of editing operations, a user could describe the change they wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to alter something in the scene? Tell the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to add something? Tell it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to remove something or change the appearance of an element? Again, describe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The important part is that the system was intended to make targeted changes while keeping the rest of the footage intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who has spent time inside professional editing software will understand why this matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Video editing is extraordinarily powerful, but it can also be fiddly. A simple-looking change can involve masking, tracking, keyframes and several other steps that are invisible to someone watching the finished video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is slowly changing that relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of learning where a particular button lives, you tell the software what you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re not at the point where you can give every complicated editing job a one-line instruction and walk away. But the direction is pretty clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So where is Movie Gen today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the story needs a little context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen itself isn&#8217;t a consumer product in the traditional sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta introduced it as research and worked with creators and filmmakers to explore how the technology could be developed further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the ideas behind it didn&#8217;t stay inside a research paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, Meta began bringing AI-powered video editing features into Meta AI and its Edits app. Meta described those features as being inspired by its Movie Gen research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Meta has continued developing its underlying video technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2026, the company introduced Muse Image and previewed Muse Video, a newer generation of media-generation technology. Meta says Muse Video supports native audio and is being developed with improvements in visual quality, prompt following and temporal consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That evolution is probably more important than the Movie Gen name itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen was a demonstration of what Meta thought was possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muse Video is part of its attempt to push that technology further toward actual products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should creators care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the interesting part isn&#8217;t really the ability to make a weird six-second AI video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve already reached the point where AI can make weird six-second videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more consequential question is what happens when these systems become reliable enough to handle ordinary creative work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small business could create an advertisement without organising a shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A YouTuber could visualise an idea before deciding whether it is worth filming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A writer could turn a scene from a script into a rough visual reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A social-media creator could produce several versions of a concept without reshooting the same scene five times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A filmmaker could use generated footage during pre-production to test an idea before committing real money to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of that means people disappear from the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the opposite may happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When generating footage becomes cheaper, <strong>the value of having a good idea\u2014and knowing what to ask for\u2014could become even more important.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If everyone can produce a technically impressive video, technical production quality stops being much of a differentiator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept becomes the differentiator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story becomes the differentiator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taste becomes the differentiator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But there&#8217;s still a lot that AI video hasn&#8217;t figured out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The demos can be spectacular. That doesn&#8217;t mean the underlying problem has been solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longer videos remain difficult. Complicated physical interactions can fall apart. Characters can lose consistency. Fast movement can expose strange behaviour. And keeping audio perfectly aligned with what is happening visually is still a work in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta itself points to <strong>audio-video synchronization and physically accurate fast motion<\/strong> as areas where Muse Video still needs improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s actually a useful detail to remember when looking at any impressive AI video demo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best five or ten seconds are not necessarily representative of what the technology can reliably produce for an entire project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI video has become remarkably good at making you believe something for a few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making you believe it for several minutes is considerably harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Movie Gen is really a story about where video is heading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s tempting to look at Movie Gen as another entry in the increasingly crowded list of AI video models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That undersells it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta isn&#8217;t just interested in selling people a video generator. It already owns some of the biggest places on the internet where people create and consume video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the technology continues improving, AI generation could eventually become another layer inside the tools people already use to make content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that could change the creative process in a fairly fundamental way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, if you have an idea for a video, you usually have to figure out how to produce it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, the first step might simply be to describe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera, actors, location, lighting, sound and some of the editing could increasingly become things the software handles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re not there yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Movie Gen was never that finished product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it gave us a pretty good preview of what Meta wants that future to look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if Meta&#8217;s newer Muse Video work is any indication, Movie Gen wasn&#8217;t the destination.
