Encrypted DMs on X Paused: Is a Bigger Shift Coming?

If you’re someone who relied on X’s encrypted DMs for privacy, you probably noticed something missing today. As of May 29, 2025, X has officially paused its encrypted messaging feature. Users can still read old encrypted chats, but sending new ones is no longer possible. So, what exactly is happening?

    A Quiet Shutdown, But Why?

Here is the official statement on X from the handle @XEng.

Starting today we will be pausing the encrypted DMs feature while we work on making some improvements. You will still be able to access your encrypted DMs, but won't be able to send new ones.

This wasn’t a technical error or an accidental outage. The company confirmed the pause, saying it’s part of a plan to “improve the experience.” But the lack of details has led to speculation.

Leaks and employee chatter suggest that a new messaging product, possibly called XChat, is in the works. This wouldn’t just be a small update to the DM system. It’s expected to include better encryption, voice messages, disappearing chats, and possibly file sharing. None of these features were part of X’s current encrypted DMs.

    What This Means for Users

For now, there is a gap. People who were using encrypted DMs for sensitive or private conversations have no real alternative on the platform. You can still view your previous encrypted messages, but starting new secure chats is off the table for the time being.

This change feels abrupt. X was late to add encryption to DMs in the first place. And now, just when people started depending on it, it’s gone. Many users are understandably frustrated, especially those who use the platform for work or private coordination.

The Bigger Picture: A Push Toward the “Everything App”

This move seems to be part of Elon Musk’s plan to turn X into an all-in-one platform. That includes social networking, payments, streaming, and private communication.

If XChat becomes a reality, it could finally put X in the same conversation as apps like Signal, WhatsApp, or Telegram. But for now, there’s a pause and a lot of waiting. No launch date, no roadmap, and no real replacement for something that users were just beginning to trust.

    In short:
X has disabled encrypted DMs with no replacement yet. A new platform called XChat may be coming, but until that arrives, users are left without a secure way to message on the app.
