Spotify has expanded its AI-powered “Prompted Playlist” feature to Premium subscribers in the UK, ISpotify has expanded its AI Playlist beta to Premium subscribers in the UK, Ireland, Australia and Sweden. The feature is currently available only on mobile and supports English-language prompts.

First tested in New Zealand before rolling out in the United States and Canada, the tool lets users generate playlists by typing requests into a chat-style interface inside the Spotify app.

    How It Works

Instead of searching by artist or genre, users can describe what they want to hear. For example:

    • “Moody indie tracks for a rainy Sunday evening”
    • “Upbeat 2000s British pop”
    • “Chill electronic music for late-night coding”

Spotify then builds a playlist using listening history, saved tracks and broader platform data. Prompts that combine moods, genres, artists or decades tend to produce more tailored results.

To access the feature, Premium users open Your Library in the mobile app, tap the “+” button at the top, and select AI Playlist. They can choose a suggested prompt or type their own, then add or remove recommended tracks before saving the playlist. A “Refine playlist” option allows further adjustments after creation.

    Availability

    The feature is currently:

    • Available only to Premium subscribers
    • Limited to mobile devices
    • Supported in English
    • Still labeled as beta

Spotify has not announced when it will expand to desktop, free-tier users or additional languages, including markets such as India.

    Competitive and Strategic Context

Spotify has been integrating AI more visibly across its platform, including DJ-style recommendation tools and conversational search updates. As subscription growth slows in some mature markets, product differentiation is increasingly tied to personalization and engagement.

Prompt-based discovery also reflects a broader shift toward conversational interfaces in consumer apps. Instead of scrolling through categories or relying solely on automated playlists, users can describe a mood, era or activity and receive curated results instantly.

Whether the feature becomes a mainstream behavior or remains a niche tool will likely determine how quickly Spotify moves it beyond beta. For now, the expansion signals that the company sees conversational input as more than a temporary experiment.
