Proxy servers are crucial components of the modern internet. They give internet users more online privacy, security, and even access to restricted content. The data is there to  support this: in 2023, more than a third of global internet users used a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs are very closely related technology to  proxies, which shows the rising need for privacy and online anonymity both in private and corporate users.

As a result of this notable rise in use across numerous industries, the worldwide proxy server market has grown as well. The reasons we listed above are not the only factors driving development – the increase in cyberthreats, such as sophisticated assaults and data breaches, emphasizes how important it is to use trustworthy and safe proxy services. More than 35.9 billion records have been compromised in 9,478 publicly reported instances so far in 2024 (and we have about two months left), underscoring the significance of strong security measures.

That is why this piece aims to help you choose a proxy.  Before you choose your proxy it’s always a good idea to look at the  factors  relevant for proxies : encryption standards, server locations, authentication methods, and the provider’s reputation..

Key Considerations For Selecting A Secure And Reliable Proxy

While doing our research we identified five key areas when choosing a proxy service. Those are: the type of proxy you need, security features, performance and reliability, legal and ethical questions and finally cost and support. It’s essential to evaluate these factors to know you’re getting the best proxy fit for you.

In the following sections below, we will go into each of these areas.

    Understanding Different Types Of Proxies

Instead of going for a specific brand of proxies we went for the types of proxies you could get. The idea was that when you know the types of proxies out there you’ll know what could fit your needs.

You’ll find the types of proxies below:

    • Residential Proxies: Residential proxies provide you with an IP address that is otherwise assigned by an Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to homeowners. The idea here is that you would appear to be accessing the internet from a specific country – so that you can perform web scraping and getting and access geo-restricted content.
    • Datacenter Proxies: Datacenter proxies are typically faster and less expensive than residential proxies – precisely because they are not residential but rather hosted in a data center. On the flip side  websites may find it easier to identify and ban them. They are affordable and provide great speed. Due to their non-residential status, they are more vulnerable to being discovered and blocked by websites.
    • Mobile Proxies: This type of proxies uses IP addresses from mobile carriers. Because they come from mobile carriers these proxies are highly dynamic and less likely to be blocked. They are particularly useful if you want to access a  mobile application or generally mobile-specific content.
    • Public Proxies: These are available to the public and since they’re free they might help you somewhat. However, if you have more complex proxy needs these are unlikely to help.
    • Private Proxies: Basically when you pay for a proxy that will be available only to you, you’re more likely to be all set. We don’t imagine you’re surprised by this statement, but it needed to be mentioned in this list

Understanding these types helps in selecting a proxy that aligns with your specific needs and security requirements.

    Security Features in a Proxy

Proxies absolutely should have security The security features that a proxy service offers are another important consideration.  What to look for is as follows

    • Encryption Protocols: The most important one, and the one you should primarily search for, is a proxy that uses SSL/TLS encryption to essentially safeguard data sent between your device and the proxy server. This protects you against data breaches and online eavesdropping.
    • Authentication Mechanisms: Robust authentication techniques are essential for your proxy. To stop unwanted access, consider measures like IP whitelisting or username/password.
    • Logging Policies: You don’t want your proxy to log your activities. Look for strict no-logs policies in your proxy. This way your online activities are not recorded or stored and even your proxy service won’t know how you use it.
    • Malware and Ad Blocking: Some proxies offer built-in malware and ad-blocking features.  These two are a whole different can of worms and would require deep research. We don’t advise that you depend on built in features since they are usually worse than dedicated malware protection or ad blockers, but it’s nice to have.

Assessing these security features ensures that the proxy service provides a secure browsing experience, protecting your data and privacy.

    Assessing Performance And Reliability

The performance and reliability of a proxy service significantly impact user experience. Consider the following factors:

    • Server Network and Locations: If you’re the least bit in the know about proxies this will be no surprise – a strong network of servers across multiple locations ensures better connectivity and access to geo-restricted content. A proxy service with servers in over 60 countries offers extensive coverage.
    • Bandwidth and Speed: You want to get connected to your proxy easily so high bandwidth and fast connection speeds are a must. Some providers offer unlimited bandwidth, catering to high-demand users.
    • Uptime Guarantees: You’ll also want your proxy to be available so look for reliable providers who offer high uptime guarantees. This basically means the proxy service is available when you need it. An uptime of 99.9% is considered an industry standard but make no mistake – in practice it’s not that high.
    • Load Balancing: Effective load balancing prevents server overloads, maintaining optimal performance even during peak usage times. This is information you’ll most likely find in online discussions rather than on the provider’s website.

Evaluating these performance metrics helps in selecting a proxy service that offers consistent and reliable access.

    Considering Legal And Ethical Implications

It’s essential to be aware of the legal and ethical considerations when using proxy services:

    • Compliance with Laws: You’ll want to make sure  that using a proxy complies with local and international laws. Laws in some countries have jurisdictions that have restrictions on proxy usage.
    • Terms of Service: We are aware that nobody ever does this but make sure to review at least the basic  terms of service of both the proxy provider and the websites you intend to access. The idea is that you avoid violations that could lead to legal issues.
    • Ethical Usage: Use proxies responsibly, avoiding activities like unauthorized data scraping or accessing content without proper permissions, which can be unethical and illegal.

Being mindful of these considerations ensures that your use of proxy services is both legal and ethical.

    Evaluating Cost And Support Services

When selecting a proxy service, consider the cost and the quality of support services provided:

    • Pricing Plans: Comparing pricing plans is usually a smart idea, even though this is also rather clear. In this manner, you may choose the one that provides the most value for the characteristics you require. Make sure to look into the tiered plans that certain providers provide.
    • Free Trials and Money-Back Guarantees: These essentially guarantee you two things: time to test the proxy and determine whether it suits you, as well as assurance that you will receive your money back. This is a standard, you’ll most likely have these options, but it’s still helpful to know you have these choices.
    • Documentation and Resources: Look for providers who offer detailed tutorials, FAQs, and documentation. These are very useful if you don’t want to contact support.

    Wrapping Up

You must have noticed that we haven’t mentioned a single specific proxy service, which was an intentional decision on our part. We didn’t mention them for reasons of fairness (so as not to favor one over another) and to give you an overview of the things to consider when you choose, rather than what to buy outright.

A well-chosen proxy can become an invaluable tool in navigating today’s complex online environment, so take the time to choose the right one for you.
