How to Prepare Your Travel Money Before Flying Abroad

Planning a holiday usually means thinking about flights, hotels and what you want to see.

    Money can be an afterthought.

That is understandable. There is plenty to organise before a trip. Still, sorting out your travel money early can make the journey easier and help you avoid unnecessary costs.

Whether you are travelling for a weekend or heading away for several weeks, a sensible money plan is worth having.

Start With a Realistic Holiday Budget

Before exchanging any money, work out roughly what you expect to spend.

Consider accommodation, meals, transport, attractions and those little purchases that always seem to appear during a holiday.

You do not need to predict every penny.

A daily spending estimate is often enough to give you a useful starting point. Once you know your likely budget, you can decide how much foreign cash you actually need.

This can also stop you from exchanging far more money than necessary.

    Compare the Full Exchange Deal

The exchange rate is obviously important, but it is not the only thing to check.

Some providers may add commission or other charges. Others may advertise a rate that looks attractive but gives you less foreign currency once additional costs are considered.

Compare the amount you will actually receive for your pounds.

That is the figure that matters.

If you are travelling from South Wales, TravelCash Cardiff currency exchange provides a local option for buying and selling foreign currency. TravelCash lists popular currencies such as euros, US dollars and Japanese yen, alongside a wider range of options. Its Cardiff service currently advertises 0% commission.

    Consider Ordering Before Your Trip

Airport currency desks can be convenient when you are already travelling, but convenience does not necessarily mean value.

Ordering currency before leaving gives you time to compare options without rushing.

TravelCash offers Click & Collect in Cardiff. Customers can select their currency, enter the amount they need and receive a message when the order is ready. Orders can be ready within minutes when the requested currency is in stock, while other currencies may be available from the next working day when ordered before noon.

That can be useful if you prefer to have some local cash ready before heading to the airport.

    Do You Need Cash?

    Probably some.

You may not need enough to cover the entire holiday, though.

Cards and mobile payments are accepted widely in many destinations. Cash can still be handy for smaller shops, tips, local transport and places where card payments are unavailable.

Taking a mixture of payment methods gives you more flexibility.

It also provides a backup if your card is declined or a payment terminal stops working.

    Check Your Bank Before Leaving

Your foreign currency is only part of the money equation.

Check your bank’s rules for overseas spending and cash withdrawals before you travel. Some accounts charge foreign transaction fees, while others may have additional costs for using ATMs abroad.

If your bank offers a card designed for overseas spending, compare its terms before relying on it.

Also tell your bank if required. Some providers have security systems that may flag unusual overseas transactions.

A few minutes of preparation can prevent an awkward conversation with your bank while standing outside a restaurant in another country.

    Keep Your Travel Money Secure

Carrying foreign currency requires a little common sense.

Do not keep all your cash in one place. Consider carrying only what you need for the day and keeping the rest somewhere secure.

    The same applies to cards.

If possible, keep a backup payment method separate from your main wallet.

You should also have access to important contact details if a card is lost or stolen.

    It is boring preparation.

    It is also useful preparation.

    Deal With Leftover Currency

Returning home with foreign notes is common.

If you have enough left over, you could keep the currency for another trip. Otherwise, you can compare rates for selling it back into pounds.

TravelCash says its service allows customers to sell unused foreign notes, giving travellers another option after returning home.

Just as when buying currency, check the rate before making the exchange.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way

Travel money does not need to be complicated.

Work out your budget, compare the full exchange deal, consider ordering currency before travelling and take a sensible mixture of cash and cards.

Most importantly, do not leave everything until the airport.

A few minutes spent sorting out your money before departure can leave you with one less thing to think about once the holiday begins.
